HBCU: Is It Right for You?

hbcu

For all students, making the choice of where to go to college can be challenging. It's not an easy task for a 17 or 18 year old to make a decision that will affect the rest of his or her life. When you are black, the choice can be even harder. High school students must decide between a historically black college or university or a traditionally white university. It is not just about which one will be the most fun or even the cost, it is about which one will be of greatest value in the long run. Which type of school is best for the black college student? hbcu

When all things are considered, students often choose a school for reasons other than what the school can do that for them. If your father and grandfather went to Texas A&M then it is very possible that you will also be going to Texas A&M. You might choose a school simply because you have friends going there. Another factor revolves around a particular major that might be offered at a particular school. If you are truly gifted in math then it may be foolish to pass up a chance to go to MIT. If you want a career in the military it would be hard to forego an appointment to one of the three Academies at West Point, Annapolis, or Colorado Springs.

These, however, are exceptions. For most African-American students attending a historically black college or university (hbcu) is a good idea for a number of reasons. In the end, students who attend an HBCU generally out perform African-American students who attend traditionally white universities (TWU) for several reasons which will be explored here.

One of the major things that hbcu 's do that TWCs don't do is that they push their students to go to graduate school. Of course, students with advanced degrees will go further, faster and make more money in the process. This is important for decreasing the income gap between Whites and Blacks as well as for moving Blacks into positions of power and influence. It serves to pave the way for others African- Americans and sends the un-ignorable message: You can do it! The Black community can never have too many influential leaders or positive examples.
